Introduction
This workshop brings together a diverse group of researchers, artists, filmmakers, and curators from a wide range of disciplinary and regional backgrounds. It is conceived as a space of encounter and exchange, inviting participants to reflect on and share experiences from collaborative and collective projects grounded in decolonial practices.
Decoloniality—understood as a form of epistemic disobedience—challenges dominant knowledge systems and calls for alternative ways of learning, knowing, and relating. The workshop critically engages with the enduring legacies of colonialism in anthropological research, particularly in relation to the provenance of cultural artefacts, the structure of museum collections, and the visual representation of cultural heritage.
Through presentations, visual interventions, and facilitated discussions, the workshop foregrounds lived practices and methodologies that unsettle extractive and hierarchical approaches in anthropology and media work. Participants will explore the intersections of visual culture, museum anthropology, and community-based research, collectively developing new, situated methodologies grounded in accountability, reciprocity, and care.
Held in Göttingen, Germany, the workshop provides a platform for generative dialogue across contexts and seeks to foster long-term, cross-disciplinary collaborations that reframe the role of anthropology and visual media in the pursuit of decolonial futures.
